Where is post and core needed?

Post and Core build up is done where more than half of the original tooth structure is lost either due to caries or a fracture such that the remaining is not enough to hold the crown.

What is Post and Core ?

A post is a metal or fibre rod like structure which is inserted in the root of an Root Canal treated tooth to give additional strength to the remaining tooth structure. The post is cemented inside the root with a small portion of it visible in the mouth.

On the visible portion of the post in the mouth a” Core” or solid structure is built .This core provides sufficient bulk to the tooth so that a crown can be cemented on the tooth.
